Educators & Counselors

Educators, Counselors, and Administrators

Leaders are not born. They’re nurtured, and developed.
Your students are becoming tomorrow’s leaders.
You can make the difference needed today.

Every spring, nearly 10,000 high school sophomores from across the country are chosen to represent their high school in HOBY State Leadership Seminars.

The State Leadership SeminarHOBY’s flagship program—is designed to empower high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, and community. Your ambassadors will have a life-changing experience and develop leadership skills which will serve them long into the future! They will participate in hands-on leadership activities, meet local leaders, and explore their personal leadership skills, while learning how to lead others and make a positive impact in the community.

Selecting Student Ambassadors

1. PROMOTE THE PROGRAM

Display the enclosed poster in a prominent place. Have all 10th grade teachers make announcements in their classes and make an announcement to the entire student body. Encourage all sophomores to learn more about HOBY by visiting www.HOBY.org

2. ENCOURAGE ALL SOPHOMORES TO APPLY

Refer all interested candidates to one school counselor. Have the counselor create a selection process. Some suggestions include in-person interviews to discuss the students’ desire to represent the school or an essay contest about leadership.

Suggested topic: “In 100 words or less, please describe the most rewarding and challenging aspect of being a leader in your school and community.”

3. SELECT YOUR HOBY STUDENT “AMBASSADORS”

Leadership ability surpasses gender, ethnicity and socio- economic status, so all sophomores should be considered in your selection. Also, while young leaders often have excellent academic records, selection shouldn’t be based exclusively on students with the best grades. Please consider leadership potential when making your selection. Select students with demonstrated or potential leadership ability exhibiting one or more of the following traits:

  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Critical and/or creative thinking
  • Creative problem solving
  • Strong decision-making skills
  • Sensitivity to the needs or concerns of others
  • Charismatic personality
  • Courage to speak out for one’s beliefs
  • Courage to challenge authority
  • Participation and/or interest in community service
